Last year, Jingyan Ji (China) was awarded a Victoria University of Wellington Study Award worth $5,000. This year she’s planning to study Tourism Management at Victoria University and hopes eventually to become a leader in the tourism industry in New Zealand, promoting travel and culture around the world.
How do you feel about winning the scholarship?
I’m honoured to get a scholarship – it’s an encouragement for me to study in the future and it’s also a motivation and a reward for learning at ACG.
What interests you about tourism?
In recent years, New Zealand’s tourism industry has developed a lot and requires many skills. What interests me most is the natural environment and management science – because the environment is important to us.
What role would you like to do in the tourism industry?
I’d like to become a manager or leader and help more people understand local culture and participate in tourism.
What made you decide to do a foundation course in New Zealand?
I decided to study abroad to improve my English skills and learn more about the culture of New Zealand. A foundation course is like a bridge between the university and myself – it gave me a lot of opportunities to know more about the university I want to go.
How has the course helped you on your journey?
Foundation studies helped me learn about studying and living in New Zealand. It offered professional courses such as marketing, accounting and social design, which teach you the basics, so you can decide early on a major at university.
What was the highlight of your course?
The best course was Introduction to Mathematics in which I received a high mark. However, I think Microeconomics was the highlight – our teacher gave us a lot of help.
Where would you like to see yourself in ten years?
First, I need to finish my undergraduate study and if can, continue to study tourism at a graduate level. I want to improve my knowledge and find opportunities to do part-time work. Eventually, I’d like to work for my favourite tourist company and have my own team to achieve goals important to tourism.
